Programmer/Analyst II for Mass Digitization

Position Description:
The California Digital Library (CDL) has an exciting opportunity to provide
key technical support to the mass digitization of significant library
collections at the University of California. Reporting to the Technical Lead
for Mass Digitization this position analyzes collections of digital content
- such as images, sound files, or text objects - and creates automated
routines that prepare them for inclusion in CDL repositories. Preparation
and transformation of the content is performed using a variety of
programming and scripting languages, depending on both the type of object
being transformed and the environment in which the transformation is taking
place.

This position also serves as an analyst in assisting in the evaluation and
documentation of the needs, assumptions, and characteristics of the mass
digitization projects and to prepare CDL programs and services for
interaction with this content.

Required Skills:
Experience in programming in Java, C, C++, perl, ruby or python

Preferred Skills:
Knowledge of/exposure to the following: XSL, XML, SQL, relational databases,
Unix
Familiarity with digital library concepts & issues
Strong analytical, excellent communications skills

About Mass Digitization:
Millions of books from the University of California Libraries are being
scanned through our participation in mass digitization projects with major
partners such as Google, Microsoft and the Open Content Alliance. To do
this economically and with some speed, mass digitization is based on the
efficient photographing of books, page-by-page, and subjecting those images
to OCR software to produce searchable text. Mass digitization projects
expand the ability of University libraries to give faculty, students and the
public access to an astounding wealth of information and explore exciting
new service models and paradigms.
