General Statement of Duties:

Perform professional library work and related tasks as required.

  
Distinguishing Features of this Position:

Kennesaw State University Horace W. Sturgis Library seeks an experienced
academic librarian to fill the Assistant Director for Technical Services, a
full-time, twelve-month, non-tenure track, faculty librarian position pending
background clearance. This position performs administrative, professional
library work, and related tasks as required while providing outstanding
leadership.

  
Major Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the Associate Dean and Director of the Sturgis
Library, the incumbent serves as a member of the Library's Leadership Team and
guides in helping the Library meet the challenges of today's complex higher
education organizations with an emphasis placed upon providing excellence in
student services and collections. The Assistant Director is responsible for
working collaboratively to achieve University and Sturgis Library goals and
objectives.

  
Management Responsibilities (70%)

1. Provide leadership and vision for cost effective Technical Services
operations including, but not limited to: acquisitions, cataloging, collection
management including print periodicals, de-selection, physical processing,
metadata creation, holding statements, discovery services, and data access.

2. Provide leadership for the selection, management, and preservation of print
and other one-time orders.

3. Provide consistent and ongoing evaluation, documentation, and continuous
process improvement of all Technical Services work-flows.

4. Mentor and guide the professional development of Technical Services
librarians and staff, and foster cross training.

5. Monitor and effectively communicate budget information.

6. Develop new or improved staffing models that effectively align staff with
the tasks the Unit and the Library organization need to accomplish goals and
priorities.

  
Technical Responsibilities (15%)

1. Guide Unit in performing original and complex adaptive cataloging in all
formats, utilizing OCLC and Voyager according to national standards.

2. Resolve database maintenance issues.

3. Manage authority control and supervises and maintains the quality of the
catalog database.

4. Supervise monographic and other one-time orders.

5. Supervise paper serials, approval plans, and standing order programs.

6. Identify and provide training, direction, vision, and support to librarians
and staff in performing technical service duties.

7. Update skills and knowledge of current best practices in technical services
and academic librarianship for self, Unit, and others in the organization.

8. Manage and continuously assess all outsourced operations.

9. Identify, collect, analyze, and communicate various statistics associated
with Unit on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.

10. Support concept of learning organization and support continuous
improvement, lifelong learning, and the acquisition of new skills for self,
Unit, and the entire Library.

11. Effectively facilitate the work of others.

  
Additional Responsibilities (15%)

In addition to the primary duties listed above, this Library faculty position
will also:

1. Share in library liaison duties.

2. Provide face-to-face and virtual library instructional services.

3. Serve on Library, Campus, University System of Georgia and national
professional committees as assigned.

4. Assist the Assessment Librarian as necessary.

5. Assist Information Commons / Collection Development Librarian with
collection assessment.

6. Work a flexible schedule including some nights and weekends.

7. Perform other duties as assigned.

  
Required Education - Experience - Skills (Minimum Qualifications):

Required Qualifications:

  
1. Master degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program or
international equivalent.

2. Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, methods, techniques,
and procedures, especially in all areas of technical services.

3. Ten years of progressive managerial/administrative experience in an
academic library.

4. Five years recent experience working in technical services.

5. Demonstrated experience with cataloging and acquisitions management.

6. Demonstrated experience with strategic planning, fiscal management,
personnel management, and relevant technologies.

7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially.

8. Demonstrated experience with Integrated Library Systems.

9. Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to communicate appropriately within, and outside, of the Library.

10. Strong patron service orientation.

11. Ability to meet library faculty standards for job performance,
scholarship, service and professional development.

12. Experience with data collection, analysis, and reporting.

13. Experience with work flow analysis.

14. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with vendors, faculty, staff,
students, and users of the Library.

15. Demonstrated knowledge of current metadata and cataloging standards and
tools such as Dublin Core, AACR2-R, LC-PCC PSs, LCSH, MARC formats, EAD, and
RDA.

16. Experience with integrated library systems and bibliographic utilities
(OCLC).

17. Working knowledge of inputting holdings into OCLC and Integrated Library
Systems.

18. Ability to clearly articulate how Unit positively impacts student
learning, research, retention, and success.

19. Self-starter who shows initiative and professional judgment.

20. Ability to adapt to ambiguity and change and to assist others to adapt.

21. Ability to manage today's workflow while identifying and preparing for
tomorrow's challenges.

22. Ability to motivate and inspire self, Unit, and the entire Library.

23. Working knowledge of office suite applications including spreadsheets.

  
Desired Qualifications:

1. Earned Doctorate or second Master's degree in a related discipline.

2. Experience with outsourcing technical service functions such as cataloging
and physical processing.

3. Experience utilizing approval plans and / or vendor profiles for shelf-
ready monographs.

4. Experience successfully leading and implementing change.

5. Demonstrated record of scholarship, service, and professional development.

6. Experience with Voyager Integrated Library System.

7. Good knowledge of various research methodologies.

8. Knowledge of Lean Six-Sigma.

9. Academic library instruction and reference experience.

10. Familiarity with the technical aspects of government document depository
programs.

11. Proficiency in using relational database management tools such as ODBC, MS
Access, and SQL.
