RESEARCH LIBRARIAN FOR MANAGEMENT, EDUCATION, AND THE SOCIAL SCIENCES
The NCSU Libraries has a well-earned reputation for creating adventurous
library spaces and innovative services that delight today's students and
researchers. The D. H. Hill Library combines the best of tradition and
innovation, housing special collections and a beautiful gallery alongside
vibrant, experiential spaces such as the Learning Commons and Technology
Sandbox. In January 2013 we will open a magnificent new library that promises
to be nothing less than the best learning and collaborative space in the
country. Located on NC State's Centennial Campus, the James B. Hunt Jr.
Library will be an iconic space, a place where people gather to explore new
ways to research, learn, experiment, collaborate, and affect the world.
Designed as a working incubator for educational technology, the Hunt Library
will serve as a second "main library," complementing the D. H. Hill Library,
with services focused on the Centennial Campus community. If you are a person

The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of
Research Librarian for Management, Education, and the Social Sciences in the
Research and Information Services department. Major areas of emphasis for the
department include engaging with faculty and students around current and
emerging digital technologies for learning and research, while providing
outreach and consultation in person and via email, text messaging, online
chat, and the web. Department staff (eleven librarians, three staff, plus
graduate/student assistants) help students to develop critical and creative
thinking skills in their research; create online tutorials, video
demonstrations, and web-based guides; provide geospatial and numeric data
services and training; and work with students and faculty to help them use the
Libraries' collections, spaces, and services. This position reports to the
Associate Head for Research and Graduate Services, Research and Information
Services department.
Responsibilities
The Research Librarian for Management, Education, and the Social Sciences:
Provides face-to-face and online information and research services for
students and faculty.
Offers in-depth reference service and consultation and develops web-based
tutorials and guides in the areas of management, education, and the social
sciences.
Works closely with faculty and students in the colleges of Management,
Education, and Humanities and Social Sciences to determine and meet service
needs, including the design and delivery of research skills instruction.
Designs and conducts outreach to graduate students and graduate-level
workshops on research methods and research tools, such as citation management
in a web-enabled environment.
Facilitates faculty-librarian partnerships focused on new services and
capabilities such as large-scale visualization and display.
Provides support and instruction in the discovery and use of locally and
externally available data; collaborates with the Data Services Librarian to
advance geospatial and numeric data services.
Participates in departmental and library planning, and serves on library-wide
committees, task forces, and teams.
NCSU librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to
developments in the field.
Required qualifications:
ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree.
Academic preparation or work experience in a relevant discipline.
Knowledge of relevant information sources.
Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging technologies as they contribute
to meeting the needs of researchers in management, education, or the social
sciences.
Familiarity with key sources of data for these disciplines, its management and
access, and the applications of tools for analysis such as GIS and
visualization.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and
ability to provide exceptional service to a diverse clientele.
Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively on teams and on
independent assignments.
Evidence of ability for ongoing professional development and contribution.
The Libraries, the University, and the Area
The NCSU Libraries and its staff have won numerous awards, including the first
Association of College and Research Libraries' Excellence in Academic
Libraries Award, Library Journal's Librarian of the Year, Paraprofessional of
the Year, and six Movers and Shakers awards. The library system currently
consists of the D. H. Hill Library and branch libraries for design, natural
resources, textiles, and veterinary medicine, with the James B. Hunt Jr.
Library opening soon. With a staff of 260+ FTE, the Libraries has more than
4.5 million volumes in its collection, acquires more than 66,000 print and
electronic serials, and has a total annual budget of over $27 million, with
approximately $10 million allocated to collections. The Libraries is the host
site for NC LIVE, a multi-type library initiative making digital resources
accessible to North Carolina residents.

Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, the Council for Library
and Information Resources, and the Center for Research Libraries. Duke

Research Libraries Network (TRLN), with combined resources exceeding 17
million volumes and collections budgets totaling more than $30 million.

Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a highly competitive salary in recognition of applicable
education and experience for this position. Librarians have non-tenure track
faculty status (without levels of rank). Benefits include:
24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; State of NC preferred provider medical
insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options. Additional and
