**Job Summary**
The University of Michigan Library is seeking two skilled programmers to help
create and maintain large scale digital library systems. The successful
candidates will work as part of a team of programmers, librarians, and
designers on major initiatives including HathiTrust, and the creation of a new
system architecture to serve the U-M Library and campus based on Hydra and
Fedora. The new system will make use of recent developments in the open source
community and will handle a wide array of materials: research data sets,
historical records, electronic journals, audio, video and more. This is an

**Responsibilities***
* Participate in the analysis of business and user needs, and the design of solutions involving computer systems and software.
* Develop, debug, modify and maintain complex software systems, including the full stack of components behind data driven web applications and APIs.
* Configure and customize open source software and engage in collaborative development activity using modern tools and techniques.
* Review system and software designs and prepare and conduct functional tests.
* Create and maintain internal documentation.
**Required Qualifications***
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field and three or more years experience, or an equivalent amount of experience and education.
* Demonstrated programming skills in a modern programming language.
* Experience working in a Linux environment.
* Experience and comfort working in groups.
* Intellectual curiosity and desire to discuss why we develop what we develop.
* Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
* Excellent written and verbal communication.
* Understands and values diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.
**Desired Qualifications***
* Experience with MVC (model/view/controller) framework-based, database-driven web development using technologies such as Ruby, Rails, MySQL, Perl, Java, XML, etc.
* Experience developing RESTful APIs.
* Knowledge of HTML5, CSS, JQuery, and JavaScript.
* Familiarity with applying WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards.
* Experience with Unix/Linux.
* Experience with version control systems such as GIT.
* Experience with test-driven development.
* Experience writing code to coordinate multiple running processes (e.g., an automated work-flow distributed across multiple processes and machines).
* Experience with implementation of full-text search and retrieval systems.
**Additional Information**
This position may be filled at either the intermediate or senior level based
on the candidate's experience and qualifications. Final classification and
salary will be determined by experience and qualifications.
