Training in concepts, issues, tools, strategies & approaches for Digital Preservation and Archiving. This half day block of training sessions will focus on an introduction to the field and needs in digital preservation, and give attendees a foundation of concepts, terminology, standards and tools used broadly in the field. This day of “Digital Preservation 101” is open to practitioners of all levels, but will be targeted specifically for those looking to gain exposure to the field.
Topics: Preservation metadata, principles of designing preservation system architecture, characterization & validation of particular file formats (PDF, AV, etc.), preservation planning, preservation policies, preservation organizations, Trusted Digital Repository (TDR) certification, how do you plan/structure a digital preservation implementation project.

veraPDF: definitive, open source PDF/A validation for digital preservationists
veraPDF’s goal is to build the definitive validator for PDF/A. This workshop will begin with an introduction to why PDF/A is used and the importance of validation. We will have a web demonstrator with user interface that participants can try out. We will then be look at metadata extraction, focusing on what the data means and why it is important in a library or archive environment.
The second part of the workshop will focus on how the software has been put together to produce a reliable web services that can be used in your institution.

Hardening Existing Systems with Preservation Capabilities
Many sites have an existing system for managing their digital assets, and are not in a position to implement a large-scale, dedicated preservation system in addition.
