Digital Scholarship Librarian
Summary:
Temple University is looking for a librarian interested in Digital Scholarship and the Digital Humanities to join us in the Loretta C. Duckworth Scholar’s Studio, opening in the fall of 2019 in the new Charles Library building on Temple’s main campus. This new space exists to expand the mission and reach of the Digital Scholarship Center, which was created 5 years ago in Paley Library, and includes a large makerspace, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality Lab, and an array of computers, software and technology selected for their potential as tools for Digital Scholarship. This librarian will be directly involved in building connections to students, faculty, schools, and colleges in areas such as fabrication and making, game studies, photogrammetry, textual and data analysis, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and other related initiatives. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Manager of the Scholar’s Studio and working in close partnership with the Learning and Research Services Unit Heads, the Digital Scholarship Librarian combines specialized humanities/social science knowledge with technical expertise in digital research methods to lead research projects, new initiatives, instructional and service offerings, and outreach activities in the Loretta C. Duckworth Scholars Studio. Serves a bridging function to integrate Learning and Research Services librarians into the offerings of the Loretta C. Duckworth Scholars Studio. Supports an evolving range of tools and techniques pertinent to scholarly enterprise in the humanities, social sciences, and arts, which may include text mining, 3D modeling and visualization, geospatial information systems (GIS), network analysis, 3D printing and making, and scripting and coding. Plays a key role in collaboration with the Academic Director, the Studio Manager and LRS unit heads in shaping programs and services, fostering innovation and advancing digital research methods in interdisciplinary contexts, and engaging faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and librarians and library staff in the work of the Studio. Supports sponsored Center projects as a consultant for students enrolled in the Cultural Analytics Graduate Certificate program, Faculty Fellows, and Graduate Externs. Engages in outreach work to shape the Center’s relationship with library stakeholders and the university academic community. Models an evolutionary role for scholars, librarians and technologists by continuous learning and the development and deployment of new skills in support of scholarship and research. Performs related duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library or information science or other advanced degree in a humanities/social sciences field, with coursework in or substantive experience with digital content and digital scholarship issues. Three years of experience in developing and managing library digital collections or digital scholarly initiatives.
Required Skills and Abilities:
*Broad familiarity with the evolving environment for digital scholarship and the changing instructional and research contexts in which it is increasingly central.
*Demonstrated technical skills in areas related to digital libraries and digital scholarship, success in matching technical solutions to project needs.
*Ability to quickly learn new tools and technologies.
*Knowledge of metadata formats commonly used in digital libraries and digital humanities.
*Substantive record of working collaboratively on digital collections or digital scholarship initiatives.
*Demonstrated fluency with digital presentation methods.
*Excellent written and oral communication skills.
*Ability to work within a collaborative environment and to foster cross-disciplinary and cross-organizational collaboration in a research university setting, in a cross functional team-based library organization.
Preferred Skills and Abilities:
*Experience with outreach and service development in a research library setting.
*One to two years’ experience mentoring advanced students in the development of research projects drawing on digital methods in the humanities / social sciences.
*Knowledge of the digital research practices of at least one scholarly discipline, preferably in the humanities or social sciences.
*Experience with formal assessment and evaluation methods.
*Supervisory experience.
*Experience with development and management of grant projects and budgets.
Compensation:
Competitive salary and benefits package, including relocation allowance. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
