The Santa Clara University Library is a vibrant and vital center for learning,
inspiring both intellectual pursuits and community engagement. The SCU Library
seeks an engaged, active, forward-thinking leader to join a dynamic leadership
team including a new University Librarian and the Associate University
Librarian for Public Services. Reporting to the University Librarian, the
Associate University Librarian for Resources and Digital Services connects our
community to a vast array of resources and works to advance the library?s
strategic plan and foster a culture of collaboration and communication. The
Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Resources and Digital Services
actively combines the responsibilities for collection development, managing a
collections budget of $3.8 million, archives and special collections, digital
initiatives, and technical services. One of the immediate responsibilities of
the AUL will be implementing changes and recommendations in technical services
based on a consultant's report. Recommendations are already being implemented
to streamline workflows and processes. One of the final steps will be the
reorganization of technical services which will be based on input from the
University Librarian, AUL and the consultant's recommendations. The vision for
technical services includes defining units for electronic resources, metadata,
cataloging, and resource acquisition. The AUL, working in conjunction with the
library's Scholarly Communication Working Group, takes a leadership role in
the university's scholarly communication initiatives including the ongoing
development and growth of a new institutional repository ScholarCommons
(https://scholarcommons.scu.edu). As a member of the Library's senior
administrative team, the AUL participates in general administrative decision-
making, library management, assessment, strategic planning, and priority
setting.
I. Specific Responsibilities
90% Administration
Provides leadership, motivation, and vision for staff in the departments that
report to the AUL
Sets goals and priorities for staff
Describes and redefines positions as necessary
Supervises, coordinates, evaluates, and motivates the heads of the departments
that report to the AUL
Develops collaborative relationships on campus that further the library's
strategic plan
Provides leadership and counsel on the future and value of academic
libraries
Collaborates with department heads and other librarians as a spokesperson for
collections and scholarly communication to our communities
Coordinates planning, operations and implementation of new initiatives with
library administration
Plays a key role in policy decision, organization and strategic planning,
project oversight, and resource allocation
Devises and organizes processes for the evaluation and assessment of library
collections
Evaluates library participation in resource sharing, collaborative collection
development and other consortial programs
Provides leadership in planning related to the management of legacy print
collections
Represents the library to publishers and vendors
Manages a $3.8 million collections budget, including additional gift funds,
and provides leadership in collections activities
Collaborates with staff from the Law Library on areas of responsibility
Supervises 5 librarians/staff; indirectly supervises 10 librarians/staff
10% Service and Scholarship
Serves on committees and task forces both at the department, library and
university level
Participates in local, state, and national/international professional and
scholarly societies and organizations
Participates in activities related to inquiry and research
II. Qualifications
Required Qualifications
MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program
Minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in
an academic library setting
Minimum of three years of supervisory
experience
Experience in managing a large library materials budget(s) or other complex
budgets
A strong background in both collection development and technical
services
Knowledge and understanding of the importance of unique collections (archives
and special collections) to the mission of the Library and the
University
Strong analytical and decision making skills
Effective oral and written communication skills
Applied knowledge of the principles of library management and organization
Excellent interpersonal and critical, problem solving
skills
Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively; ability to lead in a
shared decision-making environment
Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse staff and user community
Keeps current with trends and emerging technologies impacting areas of
responsibility, libraries and higher education
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated success in achieving innovative
change/reorganization
Demonstrated skill in personnel and financial resource management
Evidence of excellent leadership skills
Experience with devising and organizing processes for the evaluation and
assessment of library collections
Experience in promoting and engaging faculty, students, and administrators in
issues related to scholarly communication and open access
Experience in implementing and growing an institutional repository
Experience with digital initiatives, digitization, and digital scholarship
services
Knowledge and understanding of data management/curation
Significant record of participation in relevant professional
organizations
Record of scholarly publication and research
