Job Description
The System Campuses Catalog and Liaison Librarian for the University of South
Carolina serves as the catalog librarian for the libraries of the ten campuses
of the USC System located around the state. This position also coordinates the
technical services activities of the system campuses with those of USC
Columbia and serves as a liaison between the two groups. As manager of the
System Cataloging Unit in the Cataloging Department in Thomas Cooper Library,
the System Campuses Catalog and Liaison Librarian supervises 1-2 full-time
classified staff and reports to the Head of Cataloging in Thomas Cooper
Library.
The University of South Carolina, founded in 1801, enrolls approximately
23,300 undergraduate students and 6,400 graduate students on the Columbia
campus. University Libraries contains more than 3.5 million volumes, 1 million
manuscripts, 325,000 maps, and 944,000 government documents; and houses the
University's special collections. University Libraries is a member of LYRASIS,
OCLC, the Association of Research Libraries, and the Center for Research
Libraries.
Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time,
12-month, unclassified, tenure-track, faculty status position with the rank of
Librarian. Benefits include medical, dental, state retirement or optional
retirement plan.
Responsibilities
The System Campuses Catalog and Liaison Librarian's primary duties include
cataloging and classifying materials in all formats with original or
contributed copy records, maintaining existing records in the catalog database
for the campuses, and managing the staff and daily operations of the System
Cataloging Unit. Travel to the system campuses is necessary on occasion. This
position also serves as the primary point of contact between the system
campuses and the Columbia campus libraries, assisting with questions ranging
from cataloging concerns to strategies for system campus library projects,
redirecting questions to other Columbia campus departments as appropriate. As
the liaison to the system campus libraries, this position keeps current with
activities in the Columbia campus libraries that might affect the other
campuses and, in consultation with the Head of Cataloging, advocates on behalf
of the system campuses when necessary.
Qualifications
Required:
ALA-accredited MLS.
A minimum four (4) years' experience cataloging in an academic or research
library.
Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging standards, practices, and products,
including but not limited to LC classification, LCSH, MARC formats, AACR2.
Experience with OCLC Connexion and integrated library systems.
Demonstrated experience cataloging a variety of materials or formats
(monographs, serials, multimedia, electronic resources, etc.).
Experience directing and assessing the work of others in a supervisory role.
Excellent interpersonal skills including oral and written communication.
SLED background check is required.
Preferred:
Minimum of two years' supervisory experience.
Experience planning and managing cataloging in a multi-campus environment.
Experience with Millennium (Innovative Interfaces, Inc.) integrated library
system.
Evidence of well-developed interpersonal skills, team-building, initiative,
and resourcefulness.
Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
